Honda’s BF135 delivers seamless performance and optimum power for a smooth and enjoyable boating experience. Based on the same reliable engine that powers the globally-popular Honda Accord, it has been manufactured with the world’s most innovative, efficient and reliable technology.
The Honda BF135 outboard engine develops 133.1hp at 5500rpm with a WOT rev range of 5000-6000rpm. The 2354cc in-line four-cylinder engine has DOHC actuation for the 16 valves, which are driven by chain. This is important because it's an interference engine.
The only belt drive is for the 40A voltage-regulated alternator, which produces 30A at 1000rpm. Twin counter-rotating balance shafts virtually eliminate harmonic vibration and the gear ratio is a usefully low 2.14:1. The extra-longshaft (25in) model has a dry weight of 221kg.
The dual-stage induction is a carry-over from when the engine was first released almost a decade ago. This system lengthens the air intake flow to increase low-rpm torque, then switches to a shorter passage at 4000rpm to improve top-end power.
Blast and ECOmo are more recent addition on the Honda BF135 outboard motor. Boosted low-speed torque advances the ignition timing and, combined with the richer air / fuel ratio (12:1), increases bottom-end torque for less holeshot lag. Once the hull is planing, the air / fuel ratio leans out to 18:1 on ECOmo mode, going back to 14.7:1 as the engine approaches WOT.
MINIMUM CONSUMPTION
The high horsepower range consume up to 50% less fuel than conventional two-stroke engines, thanks to Honda’s exclusive Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) and Lean Burn Control systems.
These advanced systems optimize the air/fuel mixture to ensure maximum performance out of every drop.
- ‘On Demand’ 90amp, belt-driven alternator reduces heat build-up and provides superior battery charging capability – 48amp at trolling speed!
- 4-Front Corrosion Protection. A patented, ‘double-sealed’ multi-layered paint process. Additional sacrificial anodes have been added to the engine and stainless steel technology, along with waterproof connectors, all enhance corrosion protection.

A range of Honda-exclusive technologies such as BLAST, ECOmo as well as an updated Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) System topped off with the ‘Best in Class’ Charging Performance, it is no surprise that the all new BF75 is truly packed with power!
This is some of Honda's most advanced technology in the 75 HP 4-stroke outboard from the Honda legendary lineup. Extremely lightweight design and features Honda's VTEC technology giving you the best mix of power, torque and fuel efficiency.
BLAST
Honda’s revolutionary Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST™) technology boosts engine torque at low RPM under rapid acceleration.
BLAST™ traces the air/fuel ratio that results in the maximum torque for each engine revolution, while simultaneously tracing the maximum knock limit ignition timing that can be obtained using a rich air/fuel ratio in the full throttle zone and advances the ignition timing to the limit, in order to produce greater torque.
This boost in horsepower and torque at low rpm contributes to strong hole shot performance to get the hull up on plane quickly!
ECOMO
Along with Honda’s Programmed Fuel Injection, the BF75 incorporates Lean Burn Control technology, which allows combustion to operate on a leaner air/fuel ratio than stoichiometric air/fuel.
An O2 sensor, together with the ECM, precisely controls the air/fuel mixture for the best fuel economy at cruise setting. The mode in which lean burn control is used during cruising to achieve higher fuel economy is referred to as ECOmo (Economy Controlled Motor).
BEST IN CLASS CHARGING
The BF75 has the best in class charging performance with a 44-amp alternator. This means your outboard is now able to charge the battery faster and power more accessories, so that you can now run that little bit of extra tech on the boat to help find the perfect catch.
ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION (EFI)
With an upgraded ECU the BF75 has the latest in Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) technology. This ensures that fuel is delivered to the engine in a highly efficient and precisely measured manner. Meaning that the exact amount of fuel is delivered at the perfect time; this guarantees that the engine will run smoother at peak performance while also burning significantly less fuel.
NMEA2000
Honda is wired for the future; this is why the new outboards come standard with NMEA2000 connectivity. Equipment designed to the NMEA2000 standard has the ability to share and display data, including commands and status with other compatible equipment over a single channel.

Compared to some of its newer competition, the Honda BF90 outboard motor is very light on piston displacement. Straight from the Jazz car, the high-revving engine has VTEC or variable intake valve timing that operates only above 5200rpm, so pushing hefty loads is definitely not what this marine engine was designed to do.
Combine this complexity with BLAST and ECOmo technology and you’ll have to develop a very good relationship with your local outboard mechanic! BLAST increases the air/fuel ratio from the normal 14.7:1 to 12:1 for better holeshot performance. ECOmo leans out the ratio to 18:1 under moderate load conditions, such as when the hull is planing cleanly in the 2000 to 4500rpm range and depending on the throttle opening. Above this, the air/fuel ratio reverts to 14.7:1.
So to get the best from the small, complex outboard motor that is the Honda BF90, it should only be fitted to hulls such as lightweight bass boats that plane easily and allow the engine to rev right out.

The Honda BF250 four-stroke engine is the newest and most powerful outboard to join the Honda Marine lineup – and now the company’s flagship model. The design of the BF250 incorporates a number of advanced technological innovations that contribute to the engine’s high fuel economy and superior performance. The 3.6 liter VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) engine is equipped with an all-new gear case, incorporates the world’s first marine direct air induction system of its type on a production outboard (providing for cooler, denser air for better combustion than conventional under-cowl induction systems), and has a full-throttle RPM range of 5300-6300.
The Honda BF250 engine also incorporates the Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST) System through which holeshot and acceleration are dramatically improved by advancing ignition spark timing to within one degree of the knock limit during ‘hammer down’ acceleration.

- The technology applied to the refreshed Honda BF250 V6 engine is derived from the very same technology that powers Honda automobiles such as the Honda Ridgeline, Honda Odyssey, and Honda Pilot, gaining from years of proven Honda engineering, precision manufacturing and reliability. This cross-platform integration of technology illustrates the Honda commitment to high performance, fuel efficiency and environmental excellence for its customers. Key technologies include:
- Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC), a Honda exclusive, uses mild cam profile to operate intake valves at low rpm, then engages a high-output cam profile for higher-rpm operation. The exclusive design provides a unique blend of power, torque, and efficiency at any speed.
- Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) delivers precise amounts of fuel and air to each cylinder, resulting in quick starts, instant throttle response and low fuel consumption. PGM-FI employs microprocessor technology to accurately control the ignition timing during start-up and across the entire rpm range, providing optimum overall operation.
- Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST) System dramatically improves performance and acceleration by advancing ignition timing during ‘hammer down’ acceleration. The Engine Control Module (ECM) steps in to increase injector timing, creating a more potent air/fuel mixture. The resulting boost in available torque at low rpm contributes to a strong holeshot to get the boat up on plane quickly.
- Lean Burn Control automatically adjusts the air/fuel mixture according to speed and load while maximizing power throughout the acceleration range, increasing fuel efficiency in cruise mode (2,000 to 4,500 rpm).

BLASTTM, for maximum holeshot performance
- Lean Burn Control for remarkable fuel efficiency
- A best-in class, automotive-style 90 amp alternator and our AMP ® electronic control that automatically increases amperage as needed at idle
- Multi-Port Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) consistently delivers the ideal fuel/air mix to the cylinders, for impressive starts, response, performance, and efficiency
- NMEA 2000® Certified, allowing the use of third-party electronic components without the expense of an additional gateway interface
- Honda’s industry-leading True-3, three-year, non-declining warranty
- BLAST® System: Boosted Low Speed Torque, or BLAST®, improves acceleration at low speeds. A quick movement of the throttle control activates the BLAST® system, advancing the ignition curve aggressively. "Hole Shot" is vastly improved as more horsepower gets the hull up on plane quicker.
- Large Displacement V6: A powerful, compact 24 valve SOHC design, without the bulk and weight of long intake runners and multi-camshafts. The narrow V6 design offers top performance and durability as well as great fuel economy.
- VTEC®: Honda’s Variable Valve Timing & Lift Electronic Control (VTEC®) system provides power where and when you need it. VTEC® gives you a broader, flatter torque curve and smooth power delivery throughout the engine’s operating range. The result is a superior combination of power, torque and fuel economy. VTEC® is the modern replacement for displacement.
- Lean Burn Control®: "Lean Burn Control® increases fuel efficiency by allowing combustion to operate on a leaner air/fuel mixture. At cruising speed, this engine runs on up to 20% less fuel than others in its class.
- Dual Stage Induction: Honda’s unique variable intake system optimizes air flow to match the engine’s speed. The result? Maximized combustion efficiency, increased torque, and superb fuel economy.
- Direct Air Intake System Using Separate Dual Air Circuits: The BF250D has another industry first; separate dual air circuits. The first is used to cool the engine where air is drawn into the front of the engine and circulated around critical engine components. A top mounted cooling fan draws cooling air over the alternator. The second intake circuit directs cool air from the upper intake vents, separates out moisture, and then inducts it into the throttle body. This system provides for cooler, denser air for better combustion as compared to conventional under-cowl induction systems.
- Four-Stroke Design: World-renowned Honda quality combines proven reliability and superior fuel efficiency, with no oil mixing.
- Large Air Intake Silencer Reduces Noise: The design of the variable air intake system on the Honda BF250D also includes a large air intake silencer that reduces noise. The silencing effect results from a chamber being added to the intake passage, causing sound waves to interfere with one another – effectively quieting noise.
- Advanced ECU predicts the user’s operation: The technologically advanced Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in the Honda BF250D can predict the operator’s shifting operation based on changes in engine speed and throttle position. In order to reduce the shifting load, the ECU actually controls the ignition timing to modify torque when the operator shifts from partial to neutral.
- Oxygen (O2) and Knock Sensors: Oxygen (O2) and knock sensors help determine the correct fuel flow and ignition curve to maximize performance and fuel efficiency.
- Balanced Engine: The 60 deg. V6 fires every 60 deg., offering the best in balance and durability and providing smooth operation throughout the entire rpm range.
- Tuned Dual Exhaust: Some competitor’s exhaust tracks goes through the middle of the oil pan, pre-heating the oil. Honda’s dual exhaust headers wrap around the outside of the oil pan. This reduces heat build-up, and increases engine efficiency and performance.
- Multi-Port Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI®): Programmed Fuel Injection delivers the precise amount of fuel/air to each cylinder. The result is easy starts and instant throttle response with superior fuel efficiency.
- Non-Linear Mounting System: Patented non-linear rubber mounts provide smoother operation at all engine speeds.
- Counter Rotation: Improves efficiency, hull manoeuvrability and decreases driver fatigue.
- Extreme Duty Gearcase: The BF250D features an all new high performance gear case designed to withstand the extreme duty cycles of law enforcement and military patrol boats. This combined with a new gear reduction ratio (2.00:1) and large range of propellers (up to 16-inch diameter) provides high levels of all around performance.
- Engine Alert System: The ECM monitors vital engine functions and prevents engine damage by alerting the operator of: Overheating; Water in Fuel; Low Oil Pressure; Battery; Over-Rev; Critical Engine Function
- Saltwater protection: Honda has painted the interior cooling passages on the BF250D. This process prolongs the engine’s life in the harsh saltwater environment.
- Two-Pass Cooling System: The unique cooling system maintains an even temperature on all cylinders. The incoming water passes through each aluminum exhaust manifold, then through the cylinder heads and back around the exhaust manifolds before entering the exhaust. This results in increased cooling efficiency and long-term durability!
- Positive Lubrication: A crankshaft-driven, automotive-style trochoid oil pump ensures long-term durability of critical engine components.
- Single Latch Cowl: A single front-mounted latch combines with 4 securing points to ensure a water-tight seal.
- Sealed Starter: The starter motor is inverted into a sealed chamber that protects the starter drive from the elements.
- Four-Front Corrosion Protection: A patented, "Double Sealed" multi-layered paint process. Sacrificial anodes and stainless steel technology, along with waterproof connectors, all enhance corrosion protection.
- Fresh Water Flushport: Flushes debris and saltwater out of the engine, extending the life of the outboard.
- Stainless Steel (Steering Arm, Tilt Tube and All Shafts): Stainless steel components provide durability with long-term corrosion resistance.
- Ultra Low 3-Star CARB Emissions: Environmentally conscious technology. All Honda Marine engines exceed the highest CARB 3-Star rating to meet the rigorous California Air Resource Board’s standards.
- True 3-Year Warranty: As a testament to their quality and reliability, all Honda engines come with a three-year, non-declining, non-commercial warranty or a one-year commercial warranty.
- NMEA 2000 Protocols: NMEA 2000 protocols allow engine data to be interfaced with on-board systems and systems displays, such as sonar or GPS.
- High-Output Charging: The BF250D’s charging system features a 90 amp "On Demand" belt-driven alternator with 60 charging amps. This superior design reduces heat build-up and provides outstanding battery charging across the rpm range.
- AMP for Additional Charging at Idle: The BF250D has an industry-first feature, AMP . At idle, when the engine senses a need for additional amperage, AMP automatically increases the rpms by 100 to produce an additional 9 amps. This feature helps prevent the draining of critical battery power when using multiple accessories, a concern when you’re fishing miles offshore.
- Slim Profile for Dual Engine Applications: No need for expensive transom modifications! The BF250D’s slim 60 deg. profile allows for mounting of dual engines on an industry standard 66 cm (26 in.) center-to-center distance. Makes repowers easier!
- Spark Plug Maintenance Cover: Assists in ease-of-maintenance of the spark plug. This window provides access to the spark plugs without removing the entire engine cover.
